ABOUT

Joe McHugh

My love for woodworking began at a young age, as I spent a lot of my childhood with my dad in his workshop, using tools passed down through the generations of my family. That family appreciation for art and design is what led me to study sculpture in college, where I focused on creating unique furniture pieces. After completing my B.F.A. in 2012, I began working as a carpenter for a general contractor that specializes in restoring and renovating historic homes in Baltimore City. While broadening my home renovation skill set, I have also continued to design and build custom furniture on my own. In 2020, I completed the construction of my own woodshop, and am now happy to offer more products and workshops. Designing and building bespoke furniture has truly been my life’s passion, and I am grateful everyday to be able to do what I love!

With each piece I make, I strive to incorporate both hand and power tools. Sometimes it’s just a hand planed finish or even a simple chamfer with a block plane, but other times I like to use hand cut dovetails, or mortise and tenon joinery. Either way, I like to think the use of handwork makes each piece truly unique and allows it to shine. I also love to incorporate reclaimed materials, partly to minimize waste, but mostly because of the beautiful patina that often comes with reclaimed materials.
